We’ve all experienced the unsettling feeling of nervously waiting by the phone after taking your beloved car for its annual MOT. Whether you are aware of an issue or not, we always anticipate the worst, and dread to think what financial damage the mechanic might unearth.
But, as much as we hate it, we all know the importance of an annual MOT. All cars over 3 years old must go through the annual test in order to check the vehicle’s safety and ensure it is roadworthy.
In the UK, it is reported that more than 34% of cars and vans fail the initial test, according to the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency)*. So what are the common issues and what can we do to help?
Common issues?
The most common issue that arises during an MOT is lighting and signalling, which equate to 30% of all faults. Other common areas that result in failures are suspension, brakes, and tyres.
How can I protect my car?
Before heading for an MOT here are some simple checks you can do to help you car pass with flying colours:
- Ensure your screen wash is topped up! Such a quick and easy fix to save yourself from an embarrassing MOT failure.
- Remove any rubbish or clutter from your car. You may not realise it but MOT testers can refuse to test your car if it is too dirty!
- Double check your number plate. If your plate is damaged or obscured it could result in an MOT failure. Also, if you have a personalised plate, be sure to check that it adheres to the DVLA’s standards.
- Check your tyre tread. In the UK, the legal minimum tread depth for car tyres is 1.6mm! To check your tread, take a 20p coin and insert it into the groove. If you can’t see the outer band on the coin, your tyres are above the legal limit.
- Make sure you haven’t got anything stuck to your windscreen (ie. parking permits), or toys on the dashboard, as these can create a blind spot for the driver. If you do have anything stuck on your screen make sure it is outside of the wipers’ area.
